I was just thinking to myself, "why has no one ever made a movie
about Stax?" Then I learned that apparently someone has - Respect
Yourself: The Stax Story - so the only question is, why was I not
informed? I guess I know what I am doing this weekend. In any case,
the story of Stax is one of those music industry stories that is
just begging to be told. Shady deals, foreclosures, Wattstax, Otis
Redding, Green Onions - Stax's story is one of big highs, big lows
and some of the most influential music around - there are both
lessons and inspiration to be found here. Learn more Stax.

Record Label Profile: Stax Records
We talked earlier in the week about bad deals, and if you think a
bad deal can't bring down a successful label, just ask Stax. The
sad part of the story is that the label collapsed when it should
have been on top of their game thanks to a bad deal with a company
that knew little about the music industry. The good part of the
story is of course all of the great music. Learn more about Stax.

Record Label Profile: Enjoy Records
Enjoy Records doesn't get tossed around in conversation a lot, but
it should - and I'm not just saying that because it is a record
label that started in a record store (you know how much I love
that). Enjoy and its subsidiaries had a hand in long line of
releases, from 60s R&B to some of the very earliest
hip hop releases. Enjoy (and the store that launched
it) may be gone, but the influence lives on. Learn more. More Label

Record Label Profile: Stiff Records
Stiff Records moved over 30,000 copies of a completely silent album
entitled The Wit and Wisdom of Ronald Reagan. Oh, you need more?
OK, well, you can thank Stiff Records for things like Elvis
Costello, Madness, label tours and generally being very successful
at doing things that people would tell you would never, ever work.
Sometimes it is good to take some time out to remember that many,
many influential music businesses ran purely on the love the
stuff. Learn more about the Stiff Records story. More

Music Career Profile: Music Supervisor
Music supervisors are a bit like curators. They listen to their
client's needs and select the perfect music to be placed in that
movie/TV show/ad/video game. Especially in the case of films, good
music supervisors can be as important to the overall success of the
finished product as the director and producers. They might not get
as much attention, but really, what would, say, the opening scene
from Trainspotting be without Lust for Life, or the final scene of
Lost in Translation be without Just Like Honey? Music is another
character in many a project, and the music supervisor is in charge
of making that happen. Lest you think that music supervisors just
get to listen to records looking for the perfect track all day, be
assured that music supervisors have a VERY tough job. They are
