notes, sources, and even snippets of text or dialog, as well as
article ideas. Around my home office, I have literally a hundred or
more notebooks jammed with scribbles, ideas, magazine clippings,
and newspaper articles. While opening up one of those notebooks

Flipping Pages- What's Your Fave Part of a Magazine?
As I noted in today's article about freelance contributors, one of
my favorite parts of a magazine is the "About Our Contributors"
section. Many of those highlighted here are writers like you and I.
It's interesting and valuable to trace their career trajectory, or
to check out what inspired them to write the piece they did. In
addition, I've often seen notes on interviewing and research that
were great lessons. My advice today is to take a look at that
section with new eyes. Look at it writer to writer. Figure out what
that person has done to be in that spot today. Then, use the
answers to inform your own career trajectory.

Story of a Successful Pitch
Today I received an email from an editor about a pitch
I'd made 4 months ago! I had pretty much given up on it, even
though I was keen to write for this magazine, as it's
education-focused and that's one of my niche areas. This was a
blind pitch- that is, I didn't have a contact or introduction of
any sort to the magazine. There was also not one of those notices
that that you see on freelance writing job boards ("Hey, we're
looking for ideas and writers, please pitch us at xxxx") which are
a good way to get into a magazine. No, this assignment went like
this: 1)Idea 2)Writer's Market 3)Pitch 4)Wait But I was patient,
and finally got the assignment! What kind of turnaround times have
you experienced in pitching magazines?Story of a Successful Pitch

What a $1500 Day Looks Like
Today I stand to finish projects totaling a $1500 payout. In all
fairness, I've been working on these since last week, but I thought
the headline might grab your attention. Here is my freelance

magazine ($100) Finish a large set of proofreading for an academic
company ($700) Conduct an interview for a different trade magazine
($200, although I won't write this until tomorrow) Finish a rewrite
of web articles ($360) Proofread some documents for a private
company ($50) Proofread a newspaper from 12-3 via Skype ($90) If
you're next question is "Where did you find those jobs?" Both
magazines are ongoing clients that I found through freelance
writing job boards. The academic proofreading is an ongoing clie...
