After the Quake - A Gallery of Images From Haiti

A woman cradles her injured baby. A child with a bandaged head clings to her mother's leg. A body lies on a busy street, unattended. These are the images of suffering that have emerged in the immediate aftermath of the magnitude-7 Haitian earthquake that struck late in the afternoon of Tuesday, Jan. 12. The devastation is so overwhelming that as of this writing there is still no clear sense of how many were killed, though estimates run as high as 500,000. Kudos to Shepard Smith for Ripping Pat Robertson's Bizarre Haiti Comments

Kudos to Fox News anchor Shepard Smith. On Wednesday he called Pat Robertson on the carpet after the televangelist implied that the Haitians had themselves to blame for the earthquake that has devastated their country. Robertson told viewers of his Christian Broadcasting Network (see the video) that Haitians are "cursed" because their ancestors "swore a pact with the devil" to liberate themselves from the French in 1804. "Something happened a long time ago in Haiti, and people might not want to talk about it," Robertson said. "They were under the heel of the French ... and they got together and swore a pact to the devil. They said, 'We will serve you if yo...

Different Kinds of Feature Stories

Just as there are different kinds of hard-news stories, there are lost of different kinds of features. The news feature is just what it sounds like - a feature article that focuses on a topic of interest in the news. Spot features are feature stories produced on deadline that focus on a breaking news event. And trend stories take the pulse of the culture at the moment, looking at what's new, fresh and exciting in the world of art, fashion, film, music, high-technology and so on. Read the full story... Pew Study Says Online Ads Don't Seem to Work
Online advertising doesn't work. That's one of the findings of the "State of the News Media" report by the Pew Project for Excellence in Journalism. The study surveyed online news consumers and found that 79 percent said they never or only rarely clicked on an online ad. "They don't mind them. They simply ignore them," the report said. The report also found that only 35 percent of online news consumers said they have a favorite news website. Of those, only 19 percent said they would pay for content on their favorite site. Still, with print advertising revenue in decline, some news outlets have begun experimenting with paywalls around their websites. The New York Times, for instance, has said it will begin charging for its website next year. Follow me on Facebook & Twitter

When Should Graphic Photos be Published?

Horrifying pictures from the recent earthquake in Haiti and a disturbing video of a fatal Olympic luge crash have renewed an age-old debate: Should news organizations publish graphic images, or err on the side of caution and withhold them? How do photo editors and broadcast producers make such decisions? And what should aspiring journalists know about making such calls? Kenneth Irby has been there. As a former photo editor at Newsday and the founder of the Poynter Institute's photojournalism program he's often had to make tough calls about which pictures went to press. What makes such decisions difficult, he says, is that there's rarely a clear-cut right-or...
